Blog: Meeting other international students in lockdown

By QMAdvice 19 Nov 2020

This blog was written by the Advice and Counselling Service at Queen Mary.

Many students are currently under lockdown restrictions; students in London are subject to the UK government’s Tier 2 local restrictions, soon to be going into a national lockdown, and students currently in their home countries must adhere to their home countries’ government requirements.

You might find it difficult to meet other students at this time. I’ve given you some ideas about how you might meet and engage with other students online, and some ways you can meet students in person too (subject to changes in government restrictions).

There are lots of ways that you can meet students online. Queen Mary’s Students’ Union is offering a number of events online. Bingo, University Challenge Trials, quizzes and escape rooms all sound good fun! Check out events here.

UKCISA (the UK Council for International Student Affairs) is running UKCISA Fest, a week-long series of online events for international students. You’ll be able to get to know other international students studying in the UK during these events.

You could also apply to be a UKCISA ambassador. If successful, as well as the opportunity to input into policies for international students studying in the UK, you will get to know the other UKCISA ambassadors.

Now for some ideas about meeting people in person, if you are in London. Some of Queen Mary’s Students’ Union events are available to take place in person. As well as some of the quizzes taking place on campus, there is a photography walk, bungee trampolining and table tennis.

How about getting involved in volunteering too? As well as meeting people, you can also help the local community.

International Students’ House’s in house bar has also re-opened, and is operating in a Covid secure way.

Finally, don’t forget to look after your emotional and mental health during this challenging time.

We hope you find these ideas helpful.
