Thinking about where to live next year?
Did you know? A comprehensive alternative housing advice service is available to all students and staff at Queen Mary all year round.
Housing Services have many years of experience in providing advice and guidance on all aspects of private renting and alternative housing options. Whether you’re looking for a single room, self-contained studio or a flat/house share with friends, Housing Services can help.
Each year Housing Services run online advice clinics to provide guidance on how to secure private sector housing for the next academic year. These clinics will provide you with advice and guidance on all aspects of renting in the private sector including information on
- when and where to look for accommodation
- tenancy agreements
- legal advice
These clinics, conducted via Zoom, will start from Monday 29 March 2021 and you can book your place here.
Where can I find other useful resources available to me?
In addition, we have a search facility available via QM Private Lettings, as well as a student message board which is regularly used by students looking to secure private sector accommodation in a flat/house share.
There are also lots of resources available that may assist you when looking for accommodation in the private sector, including checklists, health and safety guidance and how to source legal advice.
The Housing Services team are also available on campus if you wish to talk to a Housing Advisor in person. We advise you email in advance to book an appointment with a Housing Advisor via email@example.com
How long should it take to find somewhere to live?
Properties are usually advertised between May and September. It should only take a couple of weeks to secure suitable housing, if you are well organised and realistic in your expectations. Some key stages in the process include; deciding on a budget, arranging visits to view and inspect, negotiating contract terms, paying a deposit (usually the equivalent of one month’s rent) and signing the agreement.
Where are you looking to live?
At Queen Mary University of London we are fortunate there is ample supply of alternative housing options within our local community in East London, either within walking distance or an easy commute to campus. If you are considering finding accommodation in Central London you may find this more challenging, mainly due to cost and a more limited supply. Have a look at our useful resources to help you get started!
